Water Use Efficiency
EKI assists urban water suppliers throughout California in identifying innovative ways to advance water efficiency. This collaborative effort not only helps water suppliers in meeting evolving statewide standards, but also encourages efficient water use, eliminates water waste, and strengthens local drought resilience.
Adopted in July 2024, the Making Water Conservation a California Way of Life regulation sets forth new requirements that will drive water use efficiency in the coming years. Under this new regulation, urban suppliers will be required to adhere to an annual efficient water budget starting in 2027. EKI offers comprehensive support services to ensure urban water suppliers follow these new statewide requirements. As part of this, EKI advises clients on these emerging and evolving regulatory requirements, including assisting clients with understanding the new requirements and their potential implications. Our services also include developing regulatory compliance documents, such as Urban Water Use Objective reports, to comply with Making Water Conservation a California Way of Life.
In addition to helping clients meet reporting requirements, EKI collaborates with suppliers to identify strategies for achieving or exceeding conservation and efficiency standards. This involves thorough analyses quantifying past savings achievements and identifying the remaining savings potential. EKI then works with suppliers to develop customized strategies for achieving these water efficiency targets. This approach includes assessing the effectiveness of existing programs and offering innovative recommendations for potential future programs. Drawing on these insights, EKI supports suppliers in developing cost-effective program portfolios that achieve the established savings targets. We also provide dedicated support throughout the implementation phase, working closely with suppliers to develop plans and guiding them through every step of the process.
EKI not only navigates this complex regulatory landscape effectively, but also communicates these issues clearly to agency staff, boards, public, and stakeholder groups to support informed decision-making. For example, EKI analyzes the customer usage patterns to tailor programs and education messages to align with customer needs.
With expertise in the regulatory landscape, document preparation, technical analyses, planning, and stakeholder outreach, EKI empowers clients to effectively navigate new state standards and requirements and make significant progress in ensuring the efficient use of water resources.
