Contaminated Site Assessment & Remediation

EKI conducts environmental investigations at a variety of sites located throughout the country ranging from vacant parcels of land to active industrial, manufacturing, and commercial properties. We perform investigations to determine the presence or absence of environmental contamination and the nature and extent of impacted media at the site.

EKI’s experience with complex sites includes pre‐acquisition due diligence assessments and developing strategies to assess and remediate regulated and contaminated properties. EKI develops these strategies to define the source, nature, and three-dimensional extent of impacts and inform the design of cleanup solutions. EKI’s solutions are designed to comply with federal or state regulatory programs, are protective of human health and the environment, and lead to successful and cost-effective outcomes for our clients.

EKI’s environmental services include the following:

  • Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)
  • Conceptual Site Model (CSM) development
  • Phase II & III Site Investigations
  • Remedial Action Plan (RAP) development
  • Probable Remedial Cost and Cost‑Benefit Alternative Analysis
  • RAP Implementation
  • Remediation Oversight and Long-Term Operation and Maintenance
  • Human Health Risk Assessments
  • Vapor Intrusion Assessment and Mitigation
  • Environmental Compliance
  • Technical Support to Corporate or City Management and Legal Counsel

EKI conducts site investigations from simple assessments to complex multi-level bedrock investigations using the most sophisticated assessment tools.

To obtain a more complete understanding of subsurface geology and hydrology at contaminated sites, EKI has implemented high-resolution site characterization technologies including the membrane interface hydraulic profiling tool (MIHPT) and the ultraviolet optical screening tool (UVOST).

EKI’s traditional investigation techniques include:

  • Direct-push, hollow-stem, and sonic drilling
  • Cone Penetrometer testing (CPT)
  • Aquifer test planning, execution, and analysis
  • Mud and air rotary drilling

Data Collection

EKI uses advanced data collection and presentation technologies to integrate subsurface data into the CSM that supports geologic and hydrologic interpretation, fate and transport of chemicals of concern, and remediation planning. EKI has state-of-the-art expertise in the selection, design, and implementation of a wide variety of remedial solutions to address petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls, and emerging contaminants. We utilize efficient data collection and management tools such as ESRI field maps and EQuIS to manage data in a cost-effective, rigorous, and sophisticated manner that can be leveraged into a variety of useful tools, such as traditional data tables and figures as well as live data tables, interactive maps, and dashboards.
