PCBs Cleanup
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a type of chlorinated hydrocarbon and probable human carcinogens that were manufactured in the United States from 1929 until 1979, when their production was banned by the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). Despite being banned from production, due to their chemical stability and long-term persistence, PCBs are still present at thousands of properties across the U.S. In accordance with TSCA, the investigation and remediation of all qualifying PCB sites are subject to regulations administered by the federal U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as applicable state regulations.
Since the production ban was implemented, unacceptable levels of PCBs have not only been discovered in environmental media such as soil and groundwater, but also in products as varied as paints, caulks, hydraulic oils, adhesive tapes, floor finishes, and fluorescent light ballasts. EKI conducts investigation and remediation studies at PCB sites that comply with federal and applicable state requirements. Our work has involved the investigation and remediation of PCBs in widely varied media including: soil, groundwater, sediment, and building materials. EKI has navigated our client’s sites through the complex maze of federal and state PCB rules and have brought their PCB issues to successful resolutions via risk-based, performance-based, and self-implementing approaches.
