Sustainable Development
For development projects, EKI provides sustainability consulting services related to the evaluation of water conservation strategies, assessment of alternative water supply options including rainwater, stormwater, graywater, recycled water, and groundwater supplies, modeling of stormwater quality and best management measures, and program management for advanced wastewater treatment plants that produce high quality recycled water. EKI helps clients to define their project goals for sustainable water, wastewater, and stormwater management practices and to identify cost-effective strategies for achieving these goals.
EKI also performs carbon footprint modeling, including estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, for water and wastewater facilities and other sectors of new development projects. EKI is experienced in working with project architects, land use planners, transportation engineers and energy system designers to evaluate and develop cost-effective options for reducing the carbon footprint of sustainable projects.
For California, the Air Resources Board Climate Change Proposed Scoping Plan (October 2008) states:
"Water use requires significant amounts of energy. Approximately one-fifth of the electricity and one-third of the non-power plant natural gas consumed in the state are associated with water delivery, treatment and use."
The Scoping Plan recommends six GHG emission reduction measures related to water use including improved water use efficiency, increased water recycling, and reuse of urban runoff. EKI has experience in planning and evaluating such water use reduction and resource management measures for several large new sustainable development projects in California.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Industrial and Municipal Facilities
For specific industrial and municipal facilities, EKI's engineers perform GHG emissions inventories and reporting services when needed to meet client-specific objectives or regulatory mandates. Within California, EKI has California Air Resources Board (CARB)-accredited Lead Verifiers and Sector-Specific Verifiers that can assist clients in compliance with mandatory GHG emissions reporting and verification.
